Swamplandia
Borrowing this title from the 2012 Nobel Prize Fiction candidate (a fiction prize was not awarded that year), I created this petite portfolio finding the near-miss opportunity of the novel to be an appropriate namesake.
The images are from Lake Martin, a swamp, bird sanctuary, and fisherman’s delight near Lafayette, Louisiana.
Because I find this part of the country to be so magical, mysterious and a little off-center, it draws me back time and again. Invariably I end up photographing the same subjects over and over, but since I was shooting the Six Flags Amusement park with her toy camera, I decided to use this unsophisticated equipment for a different perspective.
So far, so good.
